Persons of Interest

Everyone has something to hide.

Carter Wells, Golf Pro / Club Manager, Pinecrest Country Club in Caldmere

Carter drove Hargreave to St. Clair the night he died — an act he has described, in four years of telling, as instinctive hospitality. He was seated two tables away from Hargreave at the Founders' Dinner. He had been quietly lobbying Hargreave for six months to redirect a portion of the Maritime Trust's endowment toward Pinecrest's junior golf program — a bid Hargreave had publicly dismissed as 'vanity funding.' Carter was the last person to speak with Hargreave before his collapse, and the first to notice his pallor. He has never explained why he was watching Hargreave that closely from two tables away.

Kofi attended the Founders' Dinner as the guest of Harriet Vane-Morrison, whose philanthropic portfolio included a substantial annual gift to The Gilded Frame. Three weeks before Hargreave's death, he had presented the Maritime Trust's board with a proposal to fund a permanent maritime art collection at the gallery — a proposal Hargreave had rejected with unusual personal vehemence, citing 'decorative ambition disguised as cultural investment.' Kofi was photographed at the bar adjacent to the dining room at 9:43 PM, within reach of the wine service station, roughly thirty minutes before Hargreave complained of lightheadedness. He is warm, social, and moves through rooms the way water moves — without friction and without being remembered.

Dr. Sam Bowen, Veterinarian, Bayview Veterinary Clinic in Caldmere

Veterinarian, Bayview Veterinary Clinic

Sam Bowen attended the Founders' Dinner as a club member of four years — his membership sponsored by Douglas Hargreave himself, who had been a client and admirer. What the original investigation failed to surface: eighteen months before Hargreave's death, Sam had administered a sedative to a horse at the Hargreave family's coastal property during a routine call. The horse died three days later from what Sam certified as a pre-existing condition. Hargreave had quietly retained Evelyn Ashworth's firm to review the case for negligence. Sam had known about the review for six months. As the town's only vet, with sole access to a controlled-substance pharmacy and detailed knowledge of cardiac glycoside toxicity in large animals, Sam is harder to dismiss than his gentle manner suggests.

Harriet sat at Table One. She sat next to Douglas Hargreave. She poured his second glass of Burgundy herself — a detail she mentioned to three separate people in the weeks after his death, apparently unaware that it would eventually matter. The two had a documented history: Hargreave's Maritime Trust had funded Harriet's late husband's shipbuilding venture in the early 2000s, a venture that collapsed in 2018 with seven million dollars unaccounted for. A private audit commissioned by the Trust shortly before Hargreave's death had begun circling back toward that collapse. Harriet Vane-Morrison has been widowed twice. Both husbands were wealthy. Both left her everything.

Simon was not a club member. He attended the Founders' Dinner as a hired appraiser — Pinecrest's library collection, including three first editions donated by Hargreave himself, was being catalogued for insurance purposes. He was contracted for the week and had full access to the clubhouse, including the kitchen and the wine cellar, from September 6th through September 10th. His academic career ended abruptly in 2009, when he resigned from a postdoctoral fellowship at Tufts one week before a formal inquiry into research misconduct was scheduled to begin. The inquiry concerned the falsification of provenance documentation for a privately held herbarium collection — specifically, the misattribution of several digitalis specimens. Hargreave, who had funded that herbarium's acquisition, had been among those who called for the inquiry.
