Bitter at the Root
Pinecrest Country Club, Caldmere
The death certificate, issued October 3rd, 2022, listed the cause as cardiac arrhythmia — unremarkable for a sixty-one-year-old man with a documented heart condition. Gordon Ashby had been a Pinecrest Country Club member for nineteen years, a Tuesday-Thursday golfer, and the kind of man who ordered the same thing every week: a gin gimlet before the round and a Bloody Mary after, both prepared by…
Everyone has something to hide.

41. The only vet in Caldmere, universally liked, with a calm that reads as steadiness or concealment depending on the moment. His botanical toxin reference kit is where the missing aconitine compound originated. He attributed the missing vial to a training spill in July 2022 — two months before Gordon Ashby died. He was Gordon's neighbor on Cliff Walk Road for three years, and the two men had a property-line dispute over a fence that Gordon refused to move despite a surveyor's finding in Dr. Bowen's favor. Dr. Bowen told state investigators he had not spoken to Gordon since June 2022. Club records, however, show his name on the Pinecrest guest log on September 22nd, 2022 — eight days before Gordon's death — as the guest of Marcus Hayes.

Head groundskeeper for thirty-one years. Knows every corner of Pinecrest — including, critically, the storage room adjacent to the bar where cleaning supplies and event materials are kept, and where the club's specialty bitters bottles are stored between events. Marcus signed Dr. Sam Bowen in as a guest on September 22nd, 2022. He told investigators the visit was purely social — Bowen wanted to see the new irrigation system. Marcus also had a private grievance with Gordon Ashby: Gordon had, three years running, reported Marcus to club management for parking his truck on the cart path, a petty but persistent antagonism that Marcus described as 'the kind of thing that gets under you.' Cannot be the killer.

Charming, overqualified, and a functioning alcoholic who hides it impeccably — until he doesn't. Before his current post at the Grand Hotel, Miles worked as the head bartender at Pinecrest Country Club from 2018 through January 2023, when he resigned after a disciplinary incident involving a missing bottle of eighteen-year Scotch. He prepared Gordon Ashby's drinks every Thursday for four years, knew his order without being asked, and had unrestricted access to the bar's supply room. Miles insists he had no personal conflict with Gordon, though club members recall that Gordon complained about him to management twice — once for showing up visibly impaired, once for what Gordon described as 'liberties taken with the bitters.' Miles disputes both characterizations.

48. Fourth-generation Driscoll. He handled Gordon Ashby's remains — the embalming, the paperwork, the quiet efficiency of the whole business. There is nothing unusual in that; Tidewater handles most of Caldmere's deaths. What is unusual: Nate and Gordon Ashby were second cousins, a relationship so distant that Nate did not mention it to anyone during the original process, and which only surfaced when the state cold case unit pulled family records in June 2026. Gordon's estate, after his ex-wife's claims were settled, left a small bequest — $18,000 — to 'the Driscoll family, in recognition of decades of service to mine.' Nate received that money. He has no known chemistry background, but Tidewater Funeral Home's preparation room stocks a range of chemical compounds, and its supply orders are audited only annually.

Before Wren & Finch, Elena Park was assistant food and beverage manager at Pinecrest Country Club from 2019 through the spring of 2022, when she left for the restaurant. She oversaw the bar program, managed specialty ingredient orders, and controlled access to the supply room. She left Pinecrest in April 2022 — five months before Gordon Ashby died — but retained her key to the supply room until the lock was changed in December 2022, a fact confirmed by the club's facilities log. Her stated reason for leaving Pinecrest was a better opportunity. What she did not initially mention: Gordon Ashby had written a formal complaint to the club's membership committee in February 2022 accusing her of serving him a poorly sourced wine as a premium vintage. The committee dismissed the complaint, but Elena's annual performance review that March — which determined her bonus — cited 'a member relations incident' and docked her $3,200. She has a degree in food science from UMass and a graduate-level understanding of botanical compounds and their culinary applications.
