The Briefing

ESTATE OF HAROLD PRENTISS — CLOSED FILE Caldmere PD Case No. 2019-1107 Status: ACCIDENTAL DEATH — RECLASSIFIED PENDING REVIEW

Persons of Interest

Everyone has something to hide.

Reed Gallo, Mechanic / Vic's Son-in-Law, Caldmere Garage & Salvage in Caldmere
Reed Gallo
Mechanic / Vic's Son-in-Law, Caldmere Garage & Salvage

33. Worked at Caldmere Garage for two years before the accident. Signed the brake inspection on Harold's Volvo three weeks before the crash. Claims he found the lines worn but serviceable and recommended replacement — a recommendation Harold declined in writing on the work order. Reed says he never saw Harold again after that appointment. His wife Sofia left for Boston in March 2020, and Reed stayed. He has maintained ever since that Harold's death had nothing to do with him.

Vic Petrone, Owner / Mechanic, Caldmere Garage & Salvage in Caldmere

Owner / Mechanic, Caldmere Garage & Salvage

56. Owns and operates Caldmere Garage. He was present on the day Harold's Volvo was serviced and countersigned the work order — standard practice, he says, for any vehicle the garage touches. Vic held Caldmere PD's impound towing contract, which means his shop was one of the first responders after Harold's crash. The Volvo came in on his tow truck. The original scene inspection was performed with Vic standing nearby. He insists he saw nothing unusual about the brake lines. Records show that Vic had been in arrears on the garage's commercial lease for three months in late 2019, and that the arrears were cleared in December of that year.

Colette Barrow, Current Cottage Resident / Herbalist, Serpentine Bluff in Caldmere
Colette Barrow
Current Cottage Resident / Herbalist, Serpentine Bluff

Moved into the keeper's cottage in February 2020, three months after Harold's death. She and her husband Earl had been on a Preservation Trust waiting list for lighthouse-adjacent property for four years. Colette supplies herbs to Wren & Finch and maintains a garden she describes as 'a lifetime's work.' She had met Harold Prentiss twice — once at a Trust open day in June 2019, and once at a Trust committee meeting in September 2019 where the right-of-first-refusal clause was discussed openly. She denies that she or Earl took any steps to accelerate Harold's departure from the cottage.

Earl Barrow, Site Caretaker / Handyman, Serpentine Bluff in Caldmere
Earl Barrow
Site Caretaker / Handyman, Serpentine Bluff

Has tended properties along Serpentine Bluff for thirty years, including the keeper's cottage Harold rented. As site caretaker, Earl had a standing access key to the cottage's outbuilding where Harold garaged the Volvo overnight. Earl was among the first to learn of Harold's death — he received a call from the Trust's administrator the morning of the accident. His maintenance logs show he was servicing a boiler at a neighboring property on November 6th, the evening before the crash, and his log entry for that evening was countersigned by the neighboring property's owner. He claims he did not go near Harold's outbuilding that evening.

Senior Partner, Ashworth & Associates

Ashworth & Associates has represented the Caldmere Lighthouse Preservation Trust since 1994. Evelyn personally handled the Trust's legal affairs in 2019, including the right-of-first-refusal clause and the post-Harold sale process. She was the attorney who drafted the December 2019 occupancy agreement for the Barrows. She has told the law clinic that she followed the Trust's instructions precisely and that Harold's death, while tragic, was unrelated to the lease transaction she handled. Her billing records for October–November 2019 show three unscheduled client consultations billed to the Trust, at dates she has declined to specify without a subpoena.
